Elchuri Mariyamma’s family is one of the poorest families in
Paleti Nagar village in Vetapalem Mandal, Prakasam District.
Mariyamma is a 60 years old woman belonging to Scheduled Tribe
community, which is the most backward and struggling for
livelihood in the present society. She is married with three
children. She and her husband work in agricultural fields as
daily wage labourers. Mariyamma and her husband have no
agricultural land and only depended on seasonal agricultural
labour works, which do not provide permanent livelihood sources
to meet their annual family expenditure. In 1996 Mariyamma’s
family constructed a small house with the support of the
government housing programme. However, due to financial burdens
they did not build sanitary latrine, even if there was place for
construction. They were aware of the importance of sanitary
latrine, because they had to go so far distance for defecation.
Besides, Mariyamma’s husband was often struggling with health
problems and he was not able to go for defecation so far.
ASSIST
provided them an amount of 2,500 Rs. with which Mariyamma’s
family was able to construct the sanitary latrine within only 2
days.
