Tirupathamma of Katarivaripalem village in Prakasam District
narrates “I am living along with my husband and three daughters.
My family belongs to fishermen community. I used to sell fish
caught by my husband nearby the market but this activity
provided us income only 6 months in a year and for the remaining
6 months we did not have any work. The summer season was very
difficult for our livelihood, because fish was not available in
that season. Besides Tsunami caused a high emotional impact on
society and my husband stopped fishing in the sea. This disaster
has opened the eyes of my family to look for other livelihood
promotion opportunities and not to depend exclusively on
fishing”.
In
this area ASSIST identified 130 families to whom milch buffaloes
were provided. The village, in fact, has large grazing ground,
availability of fodder, abundant water and there is the
opportunity to sale milk and milk products within the village
and the nearby town. This initiative was supported by women who
were trained by ASSIST and who started the construction of
cattle troughs and sheds and purchased milch buffaloes and
fodder.
Tirupathamma explains “I earn an amount of 60 Rs. per day;
earlier I earned around 30 Rs. only by vending the fish in near
by market. I am very happy. By the support of ASSIST I have been
provided one milch buffalo worth of 10,000 Rs. as additional
income source to improve the living standards of my family and
enhance my family socio-economic status in the society. I am
happy that my family has standard income through out the year
irrespective of the seasonal fish catch in the sea”.
