|
Kakani
Babu Rao’s family is one of the poorest families in Seetha
Rampuram village of Vetapalem Mandal, Prakasam District. He is
married and has three sons. He and his wife used to go daily for
agricultural works and lived without any serious problems. Then,
Babu Rao’s both younger sons (twins) started to face health
problems and it became difficult for them to look after the
family needs. They lived in a small house, which had been
constructed under the scheme of Rural Housing programme
supported by the Government, but due to their poor economical
conditions, the house was lacking basic requirements like
flooring, plastering, proper doors, windows and sanitary
facilities. ASSIST came forward to support them for completing
their house with all those minimum requirements.
At
present they live in the new house with joy and they keep the
house premises healthy and carefully. Children also feel comfort
with nice flooring to play. The healthy atmosphere in the home
is helping them to spend more time on livelihood activities. The
couple is living happily and with an increase in their income
levels they are getting good medication for their children.

Case Study - 1: Kakani Babu Rao’s family |
Sathram Venkata Subba Rao’s family is a very poor family which
lives in Rosaiah Nagar in Vetapalem Mandal of Prakasam District.
This family belongs to the weaver community, which is the most
vulnerable community of artisans in the present society. Venkata
Subba Rao is married and has two children. His wife Lakshmi
helps him in weaving when both children are attending the
school. Venkata Subba Rao is working under a master weaver, who
controls every aspect of the production and marketing process by
providing capital to independent weavers to purchase looms and
yarn for weaving. Venkata Subba Rao’s family income is very
meager and the most of their income goes to master weavers for
repaying their debts.
In
1999, Venkata Subba Rao started the construction for his own
house with the support of the government housing scheme. Due to
financial burdens, however, he only constructed it up to slab
level and the roof was covered with palm leaves and paddy grass.
The house was very congested and there were no doors or windows
and flooring and plastering works were also not attended. Their
income on weaving allowed them to satisfy only family’s daily
needs and they had no money to complete the house. ASSIST
provided an amount of 9,517 Rs. with which Venkata Subba Rao’s
family finished the house with slab, doors, windows, flooring
and plastering within only 8 days.
