Climate conditions and global warming have caused severe
droughts episodes in the past years in Andhra Pradesh and have
shown the necessity of a careful water management. The situation
is getting worse every year and demand levels are growing.
Drinking water has become a real problem in rural areas. In many
areas people have to walk for miles to get water for the day in
the hot sun. ASSIST provides safe water supplies and sanitation
facilities, but also focuses on educating people on the
utilisation of water and on basic hygiene |
|
ASSIST activities include: |
- Providing new bore wells in problematic communities for
basic water
- Improvement of existing water sources like bore wells and
wells
- Providing Drinking water Schemes – including Over Head
Storage Reservoirs and pipelines, in communities where water has
to be draw from far away sources
- Establishment of water treatment plants with Reverse Osmosis
technique, where ground water in contaminated by fluorides
- Watershed programs – increase the quantity of surface and
ground water through a system of dams, tanks and ponds
|
|
While
providing additional water sources or restoring the existing
sources, ASSIST made efforts to train caretakers to ensure the
proper usage and maintenance of these sources. The target
population is also sensitised about safety measures to be
followed in consuming drinking water and also on the proper
usage and maintenance of these sources. This is done through
cultural performances, constant house visits, group meetings,
mass meetings and other awareness generation programmes |
