While comprehensive rural development is the main thrust of ASSIST’s work, the frequency of natural calamities such as tsunamis and floods in the target areas, and the overwhelming demand for relief and rehabilitation measures in the aftermath of these catastrophes has necessitated action. Thus, immediate disaster relief activities include:
• Health services and restoration of drinking water sources
• Temporary relocation of affected communities to safer places
• Supplementing government support for food, clothing and blankets
Rehabilitation and Prevention Measures consist of:
• Helping restore livelihood infrastructures for farmers and fishermen
• Repairing damaged community structures such as schools
• Extending training to community organisers on trauma counselling
• Providing emergency preparedness training in coastal areas
