Sensitisation
Many of the underserved and marginalised communities where ASSIST works feel trapped in a state of despair, resigned to the belief that there is no possibility for them to escape poverty. In order to combat this negative thinking, a critical first step is to bring a change to this mind-set, and to build confidence among the people that a brighter future is possible. ASSIST field workers spend great time and energy gaining the trust of target communities, and working with the people to address issues that are hindering progress such as lack of health, hygiene, and education. Different sensitisation activities are used to help create a grassroots demand for positive change, including:
•regular house visits
•group meetings
•mass rallies
•visual aids such as posters & wall paintings
Melukolupu Cultural Team
ASSIST has found that the most effective means of generating awareness on various problems in rural communities is through the use of cultural performances. Hence, Melukolupu (meaning “Awakening”) is a full-time, professional group of actors that travel year-round to different target communities performing songs, dances and play-lets on topical issues such as child labour, hygiene and sanitation, family savings, and natural resource management.
