Unpredictable climate and the encroachment of large commercial farms have made life more difficult for small and marginal farmers in the target areas. Additionally, the mismanagement of natural resources has created the urgent need to find more sustainable means of accessing the earth’s nutrients and energies. ASSIST is working to find innovative and low-cost technologies that can help ensure optimal returns from crops in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The following technologies are being promoted and implemented with rural farmers in different areas:
• Use of organic fertilisers through means such as vermi-composting
• Crop rotation systems, integrated pest and disease management, and soil conditioning measures
• Social forestry and agro-forestry to promote vegetative conservation and waste land development
• Renewable sources of energy and waste management such as biogas plants
Information on the practical application of all these various technologies is given through regular training camps and exposure visits, as well as through the creation of field schools and demonstration plots, where farmers can put their knowledge into practice in controlled settings
